Question: I like the photos on your site. Where do they come from?

Answer: The one on the home page was taken inside a Richmond, Virginia movie theater during the 1930s. The one on this page, taken in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, appears courtesy of writer/photographer John Rosenthal. You may see other examples of his work at www.johnrosenthal.com

Question: Who designed your site?

Answer: The wonderful graphic/web designers at the Maxwell Jones Company.

Question: Why do you have to be such a &%#%@ sometimes? Can't Napoleon Dynamite just make people laugh without it being some social commentary?

Answer: Napoleon Dynamite is a terrible, misanthropic film that appeals to the worst in people. It's also not funny.

Question: Do you honestly think Urban Cowboy is an unrecognized masterpiece about the demasculinization of modern men or are you just kidding?

Answer: I'm quite serious.

Question: What are your favorite films?

Answer: 2001: A Space Odyssey, Vertigo, Double Indemnity, and The Lady Eve all spring to mind.

Question: Don't you think you read into these a little too much? Superman Returns is not about Jesus Christ.

Answer: No, I don't, and yes, it is.

Question: I hate pretentious &%#%@ like you.

Answer: That's not a question.

Question: The films that receive negative reviews seem to
outnumber the films that receive positive endorsements
on your site. Is this because you see more "bad"
films than "good" films, or do you just find it more
interesting to write about the "bad" films or to
re-evaluate alleged classics in a new light?

Answer: By my measure, roughly forty percent of the reviews are positive, twenty percent are mixed, and forty percent are negative (I just counted). The mixed reviews are probably the most underrepresented on this site as most pictures that are made fall under this category (and being more mixed bad than they are mixed good). Though I don't like to think of myself as reflexively contrarian, I do tend to post critiques more often when it contradicts popular opinion; it's that critique most in need of being heard.

Question: What other sites do you recommend?

Answer: For film criticism and movie reviews, Walter Chaw and the other writers at Film Freak Central are without peer. Andrew Sullivan's blog at the Atlantic Monthly has great political commentary. If Korean current events interest you, my brother's site is a wonderful resource, as is the Big Hominid. Film industry gossip doesn't get much better than the Defamer.
